Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
What is CPE?
- Learning by reflecting on one's experience
- Doing the work of a Chaplain
- Submitting your ministry efforts to supervision
- Participating in a dynamic learning group
CPE seeks to promote:
- Self-awareness
- Pastoral skills in interpersonal relationships
- The ability to utilize the clinical method of learning
- The ability to utilize supervision
- The accepting and utilizing of support, confrontation, and evaluation
- Effective use of one's spiritual heritage, understanding of behavioral sciences, and theological understanding
- The awareness of how one's attitude affects one's ministry
- The gaining of an awareness of a chaplain's role within an interdisciplinary team
- The awareness of how social conditions, systems, and structures affect other's and one's self
- The capacity to utilize one's prophetic voice

What does CPE certify?
- ACPE only certifies CPE Supervisors
- CPE is an educational experience
- CPE is one component required by many denominations and certifying groups
