Supervisory CPE Program

This program is designed for those individuals who wish to become
clinical educators. A prerequisite for this program is demonstrated competency as
a pastor/chaplain, things that establish this include endorsement by one's denomination and certification as a chaplain.

These individuals are seeking a specialized niche within the pastoral care field. They are taking on what is minimally a four year process.
Supervisory training has a number of steps in it:

Step One:

To establish yourself as a competent chaplain

Step Two:

Apply to a training program for acceptance into supervisory training.
This is locally determined by the training institution.

Step Three:

Candidacy. This is the first level of the formal certification
process. This usually follows some prior study and perhaps some observation of supervision. Candidacy is a certification issue and is handled by the national organization at the regional level. Candidacy begins the formal relationship to ACPE and initiates the time clock — it is expected that the person be ready to complete the next step in two years.

Step Four:

Approval of theory papers. There is some change in process going on these days, but this involves writing three theory pages which are expected to be publishable documents that demonstrate an integration of one's person, theory, practice, and theology.

Step Five:

Associate supervisor. This level of certification affirms the individuals understanding of supervision and confirms that the individual has demonstrated a clear and defensible approach to the art of clinical education and supervision. The individual at this level is able to operate programs independently. The task is to hone one's skill and integrate what one knows with what one actually does. The associate supervisor is expected to be ready to successfully present him/herself for certification as a CPE supervisor in two years.

Step Six:

Meeting the certification commission for certification as CPE supervisor. This individual is now able to present the program independently and is able to function at all levels of the association. This individual is able to supervise all levels of CPE.
